Washington State law protects the relationship between a client and a counselor, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission. Washington State law also extends this permission to minors between the ages of 13-18 years old.
Exceptions to this law include:

If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure their safety;

If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim;

Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse, for which I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately;

Through court subpoena

I am required by law to maintain the privacy and security of your protected health information;

I will let you know promptly if a breach occurs that may have compromised the privacy or security of your information;

I must follow the duties and privacy practices described in this notice and give you a copy of it;

I will not use or share your information other than as described here unless you tell us we can in writing. If you tell me I can, you may change your mind at any time. Let me know in writing if you change your mind.
